Personal strengths and abilities

Practical skill: Photographer

I am a very passionate and skilled photographer. I can spend hours waiting to achieve the perfect image therefore being a patient person.

Personal qualities: Confident

I am able to stand in front of a group of people and explain a task or experience in detail. Although I can struggle to talk before large groups of people I don’t know. This I want to improve on and develop.

Communication skill: Good listener

I am able to put myself in the shoes of someone who is distressed, and I can listen to how they are feeling then offer some advice to help them realise the situation for how it is and minimise distress.

Personal qualities: Organised

I like to plan before I strive to achieve an objective or goal. I find planning helps me to let out all the various thoughts I think of, onto paper then I can rearrange it to make sense. I will cover all aspects that need to be achieved, then I will use that planning as a kind of checklist or brainstorm to make sure I do my best in that challenge.

Personal qualities: Dedicated and strive to achieve well

I am a perfectionist, therefore I always throw myself fully into a challenge and will not leave without completing it, or making more time in the future to complete it. I also want to make sure I achieve what I am capable of, if not push myself further out of my comfort zone.

Communication skill: Explain things clearly

When there is confusion or a stressful situation, I find I can be a voice of reason at times and calm the situation, reducing confusion by offering advice.

My ideal job

I began to get a passion for photography at about 8 years old. I got my first camera, a DMC-FS8 Panasonic Lumix, for my 9th birthday. I was taught all the basics about composition, some camera settings and digital softwares by may dad. I carried around my camera everywhere I went for the following 2 years until I got my first SLR for my 11th birthday. This was a FujiFilm S4000 – I continued to develop my skills and my passion only grew stronger. For the additional year I saved up and bought myself extra equipment like flashguns, cleaning kits and digital softwares. At 14 I got my Olympus E510 DSLR, and at 15 I got my Nikon D90. I still have the Nikon currently. I have adapted and developed all my skills and hope to continue to.

I also believe I have an eye for photography, in a way that I can view something in a different way to some others. I also come up with creative ideas and set myself specific shots to achieve.

I find I don’t have a specific style that I’m known for, or one style that I enjoy soley. When I do photo shoots, I always aim to take natural images that don’t look set up or staged. I would like to travel and do freelance photography, but eventually I want to get my own studio for family shoots. I also enjoy sports and high speed photography. However I think I will continue to make spontaneous decisions to travel therefore constantly altering my style.

1. Snowboarding/Ski Photographer

What it will involve:

  • Becoming a freelance photographer, selling my images to snowboarding/ski brands OR Joining a sports sponsor such as Red Bull or Whitelines
  • Following well-known, or up and coming, sponsored athletes up and down the slopes
  • Selling images to companies of those athletes, or to the Snow resort itself

Salary

As it is freelance photography, it depends on the photographers skills, amount of work, and hourly rate. However a photographer doing this kind of job will most likely charge £15-£20 per hour. Then additional charges for the images they sell to companies and how much work they get/images they sell.

2. RAF Communications and Intelligence Photographer

Typical responsibilities:

  • Aerial reconnaissance
  • Public relations portraits
  • Photographic evidence for engineering, security and accident investigations
  • Video training films
  • Identification images for aircrew
  • Commercial and industrial photographer
  • Medical photographer
  • Photographic laboratory technician
  • TV/film/video photographer.
